Information for Prospective Members

The Camerata Singers choir is an assembly of singers from southeast Idaho and from all walks of life with one thing in common:  a love of singing and performing beautiful classic choral music with the goals of musical excellence, fellowship, and a bit of fun.

Do I have to be a professional singer?

You do not have to be a professional-level singer to sing with Camerata Singers!  While there are a number of music educators, performers, and music graduates in our group, most members are people from non-musical professions who love to sing for leisure.

Do I have to be able to read music?

Some proficiency in reading music is beneficial to your enjoyment of membership.

How do I benefit as a member?

Remember the fun you used to have while singing?  Perhaps you have been part of a school, church, or community singing group.  The pure joy of performing great classics and meeting with friends are the greatest benefits of membership.  It’s been said that no one can be unhappy while singing, and our members seem to believe it!  The recapturing and advancement of singing skills gives members a feeling of accomplishment. Performance for audiences is extremely gratifying when the work of rehearsal brings out a collective sound that sweeps the audience of its feet!  We just do it because we love to sing and perform!

How much time will membership involve?

The Camerata Singers performance year is divided into two performance seasons.  The fall performance season typically begins the final week in August, builds toward a fall concert in November, and ends with a collaborative Christmas performance with the Idaho State Civic Symphony in early December.  The spring performance season typically begins the second week in January and ends with a spring concert in late April to early May.

Choir membership is initiated and renewed each performance season.  Throughout the performance season, members meet for rehearsal each Tuesday evening from 7:30 - 9:30 in the choir room of the Fine Arts Building on the Idaho State University campus.  Members are expected to miss no more than 3 rehearsals during the performance season in order to qualify for participation in that season's concert.  There are usually one or two additional rehearsals scheduled during the week of the concert.

How do I join?

The Camerata Singers holds open enrollment during the first 3 weeks of each performance season.  Enrollment is closed for the season following the third open enrollment week.  During the open enrollment period, both new and returning members need to attend a Tuesday rehearsal to pick up their music, pay membership dues, and begin rehearsals.  New and returning members are highly encouraged to begin with the first scheduled rehearsal, as Dr. Anderson wastes little time in moving forward.

Do I have to audition?

During the first three weeks of the performance season, Dr. Anderson holds auditions for new members in order to assess vocal range, tone, pitch, and sight reading.  This helps Dr. Anderson to determine your vocal part and placement within the choir.  Auditions are held in private after regular rehearsal time, each taking about 10-15 minutes.
